The Algarve's beaches are among the best in Europe. Some boast long expanses of white sand, others are nestled within rocky coves and many are peppered with beautiful, cliff-side rock formations, sculpted by the relentless Atlantic Ocean. From May to October, the Algarve’s beaches cater for swimmers, surfers and sunbathers. The region's beaches are still usable in late October. Even after that, the continuously pleasant weather makes the Algarve a great winter and springtime destination.
The Algarve's coastline is perfect for surfing, windsurfing, water skiing and kitesurfing. Deep sea fishing, boat chartering and cruises are also becoming ever more popular. However for contrast, head to the region southwest of Alentejo and the Costa Vicentina Natural Park - a protected area of stunning landscapes formed by the sea and mountains. You’ll find huge and deserted expanses of sand, some with distinctive cliffs and rock formations - Monte Clérigo, Arrifana, Castelejo, Salema and Burgau beaches are some of the best. And if you want to pose on the beach with the beautiful people, then Vale do Lobo, Ancão and Quinta do Lago are the places to be. You’ll find yourself sizzling in the sun alongside the international jet-set holidaying at the nearby upmarket resorts.

Further south from Faro to Manta Rota, the Ria Formosa Natural Park offers peaceful natural surroundings and you can take a boat out to explore the interlinking islands and islets, canals and lagoons. On the windward coast Praia de Dona Ana is popular with both Portuguese and international bathers whilst the beaches between Lagos and Vilamoura offer plenty for water sports enthusiasts, and are notable for their reddish cliffs, café terraces and rocky coves.
With over 150 kilometres of golden beaches, the Algarve in Southern Portugal is perfect for a relaxing holiday in the sun. You can get tuition in just about any water sport if you want to try something new. And there are even some naturist beaches along the Algarve coastline, proving the region really does cater for all types of holiday…
