The Algarve is also a haven for walkers and hikers, who can explore the numerous cliff-top paths or amble through the lush Portuguese countryside. Ramblers are encouraged to visit the old spa town of Termas de Monchique before setting off across the Serra de Monchique mountain range or through the enchanting cork and chestnut forests of Caldas de Monchique.
Make sure you also explore the vast expanses of unspoilt countryside in the protected landscape area of the Natural Park of the South-west Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, and in between the seaside towns and villages. You’ll find vast fields planted with cereals, and open countryside dotted with the occasional olive or fig tree to give some shade when you’re feeling weary. However if you can’t do without the sea, the region’s 200-kilometre-long coastline offers you a great variety of walks and treks. Divide your time between small beaches nestling amidst the rocks and longer beaches with their ochre-coloured cliffs. There are also many guided walking tours and holidays available in the Algarve that offer full board, accommodation and sightseeing included.
