Famed for its domineering cathedral and red sandstone castle, the Moorish town of Silves is a history lover’s delight. Located in the southernmost region of Portugal, Algarve, it is situated in the Serra de Monchique chain and in one of Portugal’s most fertile areas in which citrus fruit is mostly grown.

Evidence suggests that this town was inhabited as early as the Iron Age, and the Romans and Visigoths are also known to have had settlements here. But it was during the Moorish occupation from the 8th century that Silves prospered and developed into an important political and cultural centre.
For years it flourished as a Muslim town full of bazaars and plenty of trading and was a popular place for visitors of the time. Perhaps because of its vibrancy existing and modern structures, the Christians attacked Silves in 1189 and a six week siege ensued after which the Moors were forced to leave. For years after that battles were fought between the Muslims, eager to gain what had become their regional capital back, and the Christians, who were just as eager to keep their bounty. Eventually it was the Christians who reigned victorious under the command of Afonso III in 1231.
This history has meant a rich array of architectural styles exists in Silves making it a must see for all visitors to the area. The castle really is something to behold, made of red sandstone and dating back to the 8th century. Its 8th century mosque was transformed into a cathedral after the Portuguese invasion and is again worth stopping for, as is the Santa Misericórdia Church. Silves is also home to a cork museum that now acts as a function and creative arts venue known as the English Factory.
